We come into our 29th year on the cusp of a renewed
Golden Age of the Golf Trip. After having endured a couple of lean
years with diminished fields, we once again have a full complement of
players for this year’s tournament.
Back for a return visit are the dangerous team of
Richard “The Envy” Matlock and
Mike “Grizzly Adams” King. Both
of these former champions could be poised for a Turtle run. King
returns after a two-year hiatus, tanned, rested, and ready to vie for
the prize. After playing solo in 2017, Matlock opted out of last year’s
event to attend a wedding. With the return of playing partner King, be
on the lookout for a solid performance by these two.

Toby “Hoss Cartwright” Hyke
played without a partner last year. That did not deter him from a solid
final day that garnered a first place finish in the daily pool. His
points remain right for a chance at the Turtle. Hoss will definitely
benefit from the addition of Michael
“The Calcutta Chairman” Wood as his playing partner. Wood will try to
defend his Turtle win from a year ago. Even with that victory, his points
remain below his career average, which bodes well for a repeat.
Jeff “Sir Title Lock” McCall
is back for the second year in a row. Enduring three substandard rounds
last year, Title Lock finally grabbed a share of second on the final day.
The result could be an adjusted quota that suits his game. In the absence
of Ryan “Mink Wrangler” McNally (who is rumored to have been eaten by
wild minks),
Title Lock’s partner will be first timer
Clark “Goober” Lindsey. Goober
is capable of magical things on a golf course, some of which actually
involve golf. Look for Goober to challenge for the Turtle in his first
appearance.
Abe “The Ghost” Wood will try
to duplicate last year’s win of the Templeton Cup and second place finish
for the Turtle. The “Wood Sweep” may be hard to replicate, with the
Chairman now paired with Hoss Cartwright, and The Ghost breaking in a new
partner. The Ghost will keep it in the family, though, as he teams up
with brother in law Matt “Marv”
Thornbury. Little is known of Thornbury other than his evident
inability to take a selfie.
Also returning this year are Mike
“Hoppa” Penland and Dennis
“Wilford Brimley” McClane. Penland hopes to improve on his inaugural
appearance last year. His ninth place finish was fairly typical for a
first time player. Meanwhile, McClane’s return to the Turtle Hunt last
year showed promise, as he turned in a consistent four days. He should
challenge this year if his game is right.
Norm "The Total Package"
Templeton still stings from losing last year’s Templeton Cup to the
Ghost. With Greg “Stone Cold” Goddard out of the mix, Templeton saw a
golden opportunity to finally claim the Cup. Excess travel before the
tournament resulted in the Package’s worst performance in years, however.
As a result, the Ghost was able to edge him by four points. Templeton
intends to be there early this year to vie for both the Cup and the
Turtle. He’ll team with longtime partner
Dan "The Man" Moore, who hopes to
get back into the mix after a dreary 13th place finish a year
ago.
Greg “Loguemeister” Logue could
not repeat 2017’s Turtle win. His eighth place finish a year ago could
give him the quota adjustment he needs to compete for another Turtle this
year. His partner, Michael “The Hoser”
Moser showed signs of life with his third place finish last year after
several years of steady decline. If his game is in shape, he could
contend for this first Turtle.
Jonathan "Mayhem" Greer finally
began to show potential after his first two disastrous tournaments. He
hopes to build on this fourth place finish last year and possibly
challenge for the Turtle. Partner
Carlton "The Senator" Logue has lost ground each of the last three
years, finishing seventh in 2018. He hopes to reverse that trend for a
chance to claim the Turtle in 2019.
